Student Safety Calendar – part 4🩷

Sometimes things don't go exactly as planned. In times of crisis, it is important that we know our roles, and who we can turn to in situations that are very demanding. SUS’s Presidium has summarized important information about where you as a student can turn if something serious happens while you’re on campus.

What counts as a crisis?

A crisis is a situation where ordinary solutions are not sufficient to deal with the problem. According to MSB (Sweden’s Civil Contingencies Agency), crises are events that threaten important functions in society and that often require immediate action. Crises include serious accidents that affect many people, environmental or health hazards (fires, chemical spills, gases), data breaches or events that can cause ethical and trust-related damage.

A crisis at a university can arise when an unexpected and serious situation disrupts daily functions, affects students or staff, and requires quick decisions and actions to be handled.

How SU handles a crisis

Sweden’s crisis management is based on three principles – responsibility, continuity and proximity.

The principle of responsibility means that whoever is responsible for daily functions at an organization also has responsibility during a crisis. For example, the Head of department has a responsibility for the students at the department – this responsibility also exists if a crisis occurs.

The principle of continuity means that things should function in a normal way far as possible even during a crisis.

The principle of proximity means that a crisis should primarily be handled where it occurs and by those who are most directly affected and responsible in an organization. This means that the central crisis management group has overall responsibility, but the university's departments, faculty-based centers and the administration department have a responsibility to handle crises that arise at their own departments.

For students at SU, this means that in the event of a crisis, you should contact the Head of department or center where the issue occurred. Each department and center has a crisis management group that has been trained by the security department.

Report an incident at SU

If you are involved in an accident or are subjected to violence, threats or harassment on campus, it is important that you report the incident. When reporting, the Head of department, safety representative and work environment coordinator are also informed. If you are unsure about what counts as an incident, you can contact IA-support@su.se.

What should be reported through the IA-system are actions that violate the law or may harm the University, but also events that may or have led to damage to the environment, property, or people. This can include injuries from accidents, environmental hazards, threats and violence.

Report an incident here.

In the event of a serious accident or personal injury, always call 112. If something threatens to lead to immediate injuries, contact the emergency officer at 08-16 17 18.

Together we work to make SU a place where everyone feels safe!
