In solidarity with Myanmar students and citizens
Many of us have witnessed the recent developments in Myanmar with horror. The military coup on February 1st, 2021 is a sad reminder that the fight for democracy and equal rights of all human beings must never take a break. In that struggle, higher education plays a crucial role. At the University of Myanmar, students have mobilized to protest against the military coup and stand up for democracy, just as the students demonstrated in the 1980s and 90s against the then military junta in the country. Now, as then, the protests have been brutally crushed.
Stockholm University Student Union (SUS) wants to show solidarity with the democratic forces in Myanmar and condemn the military's violence against democracy and ordinary citizens with this message. The fight for student rights goes hand in hand with the fight for human rights, the situation in Myanmar being the latest in a long line of these examples.
