“We condemn Swedish universities' collaborations with universities that violate human rights”
This time of the year, Stockholm University Student Union (SUS) would usually prepare for our participation in Stockholm Pride. To SUS, it is obvious that universities and colleges should be places for learning where everyone is welcome, regardless of ethnicity, beliefs, gender identity, gender expression or sexuality – this is something that is regulated in Sweden in the Discrimination Act.
In addition, Sweden’s institutions of higher education have an opportunity to influence the study climate in other countries, through international collaborations. Stockholm University, and other Swedish institutions of higher education are part of a number of collaborations, but collaborative partners do not always prioritize students' rights. In some countries, it does occur, among other things, that gatherings for LGBTQIA+ students are banned and canceled. We condemn Swedish universities' collaborations with universities that violate human rights and demand that Stockholm University show greater consideration for human rights in future collaborations. It is necessary for the University's vision of contributing to a sustainable democratic society.
