SUS’s presidium: “Trans people should be able to feel safe at Stockholm University.”

“Due to an incident of transphobic messages that were sent to one of our student union associations, we have been reminded of how trans people are attacked everywhere in our society – within academia as well. This is of course unacceptable. As a trans person, you should be able to feel safe as a student at Stockholm University. This applies to all parts of your education: in the lecture hall, in the corridor and at the student pub.

SUS cherishes the equality of all people. This means that we work with norm criticism in order to prevent all forms of discrimination. We want Stockholm University to be a place for all students, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or presentation. Trans people’s gender identity is often questioned by others. Trans people also have more health issues than the general population, according The Public Health Agency of Sweden. Research shows that they are more subjected to discrimination and harassment, as well as violence and threats of violence, compared to other social groups.

SUS will continue the fight for a university free from discrimination. Together with Stockholm University and other colleges and universities, student unions and associations within the Academic Pride, SUS will also participate in this year’s Stockholm Pride later this year.”
