SUS Adventure to Björkliden with TimeTravels!
For many students at Stockholm University, experiencing the snow-covered landscapes of Northern Sweden is a dream. This March, a group of adventurous students turned that dream into reality as they embarked on the SUS and TimeTravels adventure trip to Björkliden! Among them was Isabell, a Master's student in Marketing at SU, who shared her experiences of this unforgettable journey. Having lived in Stockholm since August 2024, she was eager to explore more of Sweden, especially its northernmost regions and experience Northern Sweden in winter times.
"This trip was a great opportunity — well-priced and well-organized, so I didn’t have to plan everything myself”, she said.
Her biggest hope during the trip? To witness the Northern Lights. Fortunately, she was in luck!
One of the most exciting aspects of the trip was trying out new winter activities. Isabells favourite activity was the snowshoe hike.
"I had never done it before, and it was fun walking through the deep snow and even sliding down a hill!", she shared. The group also took a road trip to Narvik, Norway, where she braved the icy waters of a fjord in an ice bath!
Despite preparing for a winter adventure, she was still surprised by what awaited her in the Arctic Circle.
"The amount of snow was incredible — even though locals said it was less than usual," she remarked. Spotting moose and reindeer in the wild, roaming freely without fences, added to the beauty of the experience.
"The landscapes were breathtaking — frozen lakes, snowy mountains, and bright sunshine.”
The journey to the North also sparked reflections on life in the far reaches of Sweden.
"I can imagine how amazing it is to live close to nature, with all the frozen lakes and snowmobiles driving around — it looks like fun!" she said.
However, she admitted that staying there permanently might not be for her. "It’s great for a getaway, to relax in the summer or go skiing in the winter. But for a longer period, especially when you're young, it might feel too remote."
Still, she admired the slower pace of life compared to the busy city life in Stockholm.
Of all the experiences, seeing the Northern Lights was a true highlight. "It’s hard to put into words," she said.
"The sky came alive with dancing colors, shifting from green to purple. It felt like a dream — something you just have to see yourself."
Next adventure is just around the corner! SUS and TimeTravels now offers a new trip this spring — this time to the Norwegian Fjords! Hiking the glacier, sailing through the fjords, exploring Bergen and discovering the pure beauty of tiny fjord villages.
