In solidarity with the students and citizens of Iran
During the last couple of days, we have been reached by very alarming reports in the media of that Iranian security forces are using deadly violence against students that are peacefully protesting in the country. The protests begun after Mahsa Jîna Amini passed away after having been arrested by the morality police in Iran. The arrest occurred solely because she, according to the morality police, was wearing her hijab in a way that is not permitted according to the government’s enforced hijab laws.
Women’s equal rights and citizens’ right to express their opinions through peaceful protests are central parts of a democratic society. Stockholm University Student Union’s position is that all human beings’ right to self-determination and freedom of speech must be protected. Therefore, we would like to express our support for all the students and other citizens who are participating in the protests against the Iranian government’s oppression and morality laws. We condemn the violence and oppression that the Iranian people are subjected to by the Iranian government.
