Student Safety Calendar 🩷
Happy first Advent and welcome to SUS’s Student Safety Calendar. During each Advent until Christmas, SUS’s presidium will share tips and important information about your rights as a student, where to turn if you are exposed to bad treatment or harassment, and if you feel unsafe or alone on campus.
As a student, you have the right to a study environment where you can be who you are and develop, free from harassment, degrading and offensive treatment. There are special requirements for colleges and universities to act when someone is subjected to harassment, and we as a student union can give you support.
What is harassment?
Harassment is verbal or non-verbal treatment that is unwanted and violates someone's dignity. It may be that someone has been subjected to abusive treatment that is related to one of the seven grounds of discrimination, and in such a case may become a matter for the Equality Ombudsman. It is the person who is subjected to harassment who decides what is unwanted and what is offensive.
Remember that you always have the right to say no and demand a study environment where you can feel good and develop, regardless of whether it concerns a lecture, group work or self-studies on campus!
Where can you turn?
At SU, harassment is investigated at two levels, at departments and centrally. At departments, it is the Head of Department who has investigation responsibility and that is where you can turn in the first instance if you have experienced harassment connected to studies. At SU centrally, you can contact the University Administration. In both cases, you can get support from SUS's Ombud in formulating your issue or ask for advice by reporting an issue to us.
Being exposed to harassment usually means a great deal of mental stress. Student health in Stockholm offers call support that can be booked during telephone hours. At Student health you will find current telephone times and information.
Together we work for a study environment where everyone can feel welcome!
